    About Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a common (and very irritating) condition where you may experience a ringing or other monotonous noise in your ears. This condition will not cause you to lose your hearing completely but it can severely impact your daily life. Our Registered Hearing Professionals can recommend a course of action and our goal is to help you relieve this problem.

Did you know that approximately 40% of Canadians have experienced tinnitus at least once in their life? (Like we said, it’s a common condition- you are not alone!) Tinnitus is associated with many forms of hearing problems and can also be a symptom of other health problems.

    Tinnitus is typically caused by:

    • Hearing LossMost individuals with tinnitus also have some kind of hearing loss.

    • Loud Noise – Exposure to loud noises can cause permanent hearing loss and tinnitus! Continued exposure to extremely loud sounds can make the tinnitus and hearing loss become worse. Avoid occupational hazards and concerts.

    • MedicationIncredibly, there are over  200 medications, including aspirin, which can cause tinnitus.

    • Other potential causesTinnitus can also be caused by various allergies, tumors, and even problems in the heart and blood vessels, jaw and neck.

Audiometric testing and a complete health overview will help identify which of the following is the best treatment option for you:

    • Hearing AidsHearing aids can create a dual benefit of enhancing hearing and masking the tinnitus.

    • MaskersSmall electronic devices that look similar to hearing aids and generate sounds which mask or cover up the tinnitus.

    • Allergy TreatmentIf you think you’re suffering from allergies, get tested! If positive for certain allergies, getting treatment can have the dual effect of reducing the ringing in your ears and giving you a big boost in energy.

Tinnitus management works—talk to us and put an end to the ringing in your ears.

First of all, don’t panic. You don’t have to live with the ringing in your ears forever. Your first step should be to call Hear in Edmonton and schedule a visit with one of our Registered Hearing Aid Practitioners for an evaluation.

There could  be other medical issues behind the tinnitus, and it is important to rule out anything that may affect your overall health. It may be appropriate for you to be referred to an ear, nose and throat doctor to complete your diagnosis.

    Avoid Making Your Tinnitus Worse

If you work in a place with loud noises (such as construction sites or airport) you should use preventative devices to keep your tinnitus from getting worse.

You should also avoid smoking, alcohol and other loud noises (such as going to a concert or even having your television on too high).

If it is difficult for you to hear over your tinnitus, ask people to face you when they talk. Seeing expressions helps you understand words better. Ask people to speak louder, but not shout. You can also inform them that they do not have to talk slowly, just more clearly.

Great place to get your hearing tested. I shopped around to ten different places and they had the best prices and the best service.

Erin was VERY helpful – explaining everything as she went. She answered ALL my questions (and I know nothing about hears) with patience and thoroughly. Would recommend this place totally!
